Faith

To have faith
Is to swim in the ocean;
To plunge into the angry waves
Past the dropoff
Where the sandy floor
Falls from beneath flailing feet.

It is trusting
That the curling crests
Will somersault to pick you back up.
It is being sure
that undertow and current
Can be outwitted.

But more than that,
Faith is believing
That even if water fills your lungs
You are alive,
That above the gray, wet coffin
Waits the infinite sky.
